News - June 2009

A lovely year so far for us here at LVHS … no major rainstorms at awkward moments, Cor has refrained from drowning our vehicles (just) and we are settling in well at the new stables!

Good sightings have included the rare aardvark, wild dogs (which we hope will be denning close to Liana camp again this year), and of course plenty of elephant,
leopard, cheetah and lion. As we have had excellent rainfall this past rainy season (November 2008 through February 2009) we have seen some lovely grass for both the horses to enjoy as well as the game. We expect to have many elephants down by the Limpopo River shortly to enjoy all the grass they have yet to eat.

We have had some very funny moments too. In this picture on the right, you can see Cor is taking his job very seriously explaining the Boer War history of the area. We have had some excellent help from volunteers Fiona and Ginny who have taken their African experience all in their stride.

We are also taking advantage of the proximity of Nitani Lodge to offer free balloon rides over the Mashatu game reserve on some of the safaris during June, July and August. If this proves to be popular we will continue to offer these throughout the year.

The LVHS team continues to thrive and are a pleasure to work with. David who has been our head groom and assistant backup rider for many years is now starting to become a lead guide. His brilliant sense of humour and great sense of responsibility make him a popular guide and as he grows with experience we are sure he will continue to do well.
Unfortunately one of our horses, Braveheart, lost the battle to African Horse Sickness in March, and although only with us for 18 months he will be much missed by all of us.
We were also devastated to lose our much loved dog Brannie, who succumbed to a cobra bite last month. A very aloof and independent dog, she was still a big part of LVHS and her royal attitude sitting in the passenger seat whilst driving with Cor will be fondly remembered by many!
Loenza, Little Foot, Maverick and Mars, all new in 2008, are doing brilliantly. Here is a picture of Mars on the right and West and Little Foot below. West is training Little Foot to be his new guide horse and hopes to take the lead on him shortly.
Cor and West will be attending Burghley and Blenheim in September again this year and would love to catch up with you if you are in the area.
We are busy updating our new website which will include a Blog, press articles released and a short DVD, as well as selling our curios online - so keep an eye on it. We have also just found out that our newest ride the Limpopo Lodge Ride has two additional lodges that we can use so if you like your comfort whilst still covering lots of ground, this is the one for you..

On behalf of all of us here at LVHS we hope to see you again soon and please keep in touch.

All the best,
Cor, Louise, Jamie and the LVHS team.
